KYANITE CRYSTALS WITH GARNETS
Norway
An unusual specimen of mica schist packed with tiny garnet crystals and very pale blue, bladed crystals of kyanite. It could best be described as a round 'pod' in mica schist which has been broken open.
Kyanite is not only a gemstone but is also a mineral with an interesting geological history. It forms only at extremely high pressures – such as those that exist deep beneath mountain ranges as a result of continental collisions. It has been brought to the surface by hundreds of millions of years of erosion.
This is heavy specimen, weighing 1.32 kilograms.
