K/T BOUNDARY SAMPLE
Red Deer River Valley, Trochu, Alberta, Canada
The Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary (also called the K/T boundary) represents a time of mass extinction around the world some 65 million years ago. This extinction witnessed the end of the dinosaurs and over 60% of all species on Earth.
This is a sample of a thin coal seam in the K/T boundary layer. A possible cause of the extinction is the impact of a giant meteorite.
The boundary sediments in the Red Deer Valley have yielded microscopic diamonds thought to have been formed by the impact and the associated fireball.
