JURASSIC NAUTILUS - 180 million years old - Ilminster, Somerset

JURASSIC NAUTILUS

180 million years old

Ilminster, Somerset

A good example of a nautilus from the Middle Lias 'Junction Bed' near Ilminster.

The Lias rocks of the Ilminster area are unusual in that they take the form of a highly condensed sequence with several ammonite zones reduced to only a few metres in thickness and sometimes packed with fossils.

The nautilus is related to ammonites but unlike ammonites it did not become extinct.

This fossil is incomplete on one side but is still a good example.
