JURASSIC NAUTILUS
190 million years old
Charmouth, near Lyme Regis, Dorset
An unusual and very attractive example of a fossil nautilus from the Lower Lias rocks of the Jurassic coast. It has been cut and polished to reveal the chambers lined with calcite crystals.
The nautilus is related to ammonites, but unlike ammonites it did not become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period.
