JURASSIC NAUTILUS

175 million years old

Inferior Oolite
Burton Bradstock, Dorset

A fine example of a Jurassic nautilus that has been cut and polished to reveal the chambers of the original shell. Some of the chambers are lined with tiny calcite crystals.  The base has been cut flat so that it displays well without the need for a stand.

The nautilus is related to the ammonites, but unlike the ammonites it did not become extinct and is still with us today in tropical seas.
