JURASSIC ICHTHYOSAUR VERTEBRAE IN CROSS SECTION
180 million years old
Upper Lias. Whitby, North Yorkshire
Four ichthyosaur vertebrae contained inside a pyrite concretion. The concretion has been cut in half and polished revealing the vertebrae in cross-section.
A layer of silvery pyrite can be seen along the edges of the concretion.
A fascinating and unusual specimen. On the reverse are several partial pyritised ammonites.
