JURASSIC ICHTHYOSAUR VERTEBRAE

190 million years old

Lower Lias
Charmouth, near Lyme Regis, Dorset

Two articulated tail vertebrae from a Jurassic ichthyosaur. Ichthyosaurs were fast-swimming marine reptiles that dominated the Jurassic seas.

These vertebrae are well preserved and solidly fossilised.
They were collected from Charmouth beach and are therefore beach-worn. Finds of articulated vertebra on the Dorset beaches are rare.
