JURASSIC 'PYRITISED' AMMONITE

180 million years old

Upper Lias
Whitby, Yorkshire

An ammonite from the Whitby coast that has been naturally 'pyritised'. In other words the shell has been partially preserved by the iron mineral pyrite (fools gold). This gives the fossil a golden appearance.

Some ammonites on the market today have been buffed to enhance the gold colour but this example is entirely natural.

Ammonites are extinct marine shellfish that were common during the age of the dinosaurs, a period of the Earth's history when much of England was submerged beneath warm seas.
