While most crinoids were attached to the sea bed by a stem or stalk, some crinoids were free-swimming, such as this very fine example. Presented in a lidded gift box.
The Solnhofen limestones preserve in exquisite detail the soft tissues of animals. Although fossils are by no means common, over the years some spectacular specimens have been found, including the famous Archaeopteryx.
The photos are taken with oblique lighting. For a photograph of one of the famous Solnhofen limestone quarries click on the 'Image Gallery' tab above.
