FOSSILISED WOOD (JURASSIC)

Cut and polished section through a fossilised log

190 million years old
(Jurassic period)

Charmouth, Dorset

Cut and polished section through a log of fossilised wood from the Black Ven Mudstone of the Lower Lias. These rocks were laid down as mud on the floor of a tropical sea in Lower Jurassic times and the presence of these logs demonstrates that land was not far away and it supported a coniferous forest. Flowering plants had not yet evolved.

Some logs have been colonized on the underside by a variety of marine organisms such as crinoids and bivalves. This indicates that the logs floated in the sea for a long period before finally becoming waterlogged and sinking to the sea bed to become fossilised alongside the beautiful ammonites that make this coastline so famous.
