An impressive compressed log of fossilised wood from the Black Ven Mudstone of the Lower Lias. These rocks were laid down as mud on the floor of a tropical sea in Lower Jurassic times and the presence of these logs demonstrates that land was not far away and it supported a coniferous forest. Flowering plants had not yet evolved. This is effectively a piece of driftwood from the nearby rainforest that was swept out to sea to settle on the sea floor.
