FOSSIL JURASSIC ECHINOIDS
(SEA URCHINS)

165 million years old

Cornbrash Formation

Buntings Lane Pit, Peterborough

Three beautifully preserved echinoids (sea urchins) from the Cornbrash. In each case part of the shell is missing in places. Presented in a vintage museum glass-topped display case as shown.

Cornbrash is an old agricultural name applied to a variety of stone rubble or brash which forms a good soil for growing corn. It is now a formal geological formation.

The pit at Bunting’s Lane was a borrow pit for the Peterborough by-pass. It provided a section from the top of the Cornbrash, through the Kellaways
Formation into the Lower Oxford Clay.

These fossils were collected in 1985.
