Cornbrash Formation
Buntings Lane Pit, Peterborough
Three beautifully preserved echinoids (sea urchins) from the Cornbrash. In each case part of the shell is missing in places. Presented in a vintage museum glass-topped display case as shown.
Cornbrash is an old agricultural name applied to a variety of stone rubble or brash which forms a good soil for growing corn. It is now a formal geological formation.
The pit at Bunting’s Lane was a borrow pit for the Peterborough by-pass. It provided a section from the top of the Cornbrash, through the Kellaways Formation into the Lower Oxford Clay.
These fossils were collected in 1985.
