« backJURASSIC SEA URCHIN (ECHINOID)
170 million years old
Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire
Sea urchins, or echinoids, are marine creatures with shells covered in spines, which became detached when the animal died. This fossil sea urchin has the name Clypeus ploti and is a classic British fossil. It is found on the Cotswolds in a limestone rock known as the Clypeus Grit and has a connection with English folklore.
Hundreds of years ago fossils were thought of merely as curious objects but these bun-shaped stones were useful because of their regular size and weight. They were used to weigh out butter and other products and were given the name ‘pound stones’ with different numbers of stones used for different items. This may have been the origin of our use of the ‘stone’ as a unit of weight.
These fossils have also been called 'Chedworth buns' after the village where they have been found.
The shell is partly missing and there is one broken edge. Presented in a lidded gift box.
