JURASSIC AMMONITES

180 million years old

Posidonia Shale

Holzmaden,

Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The Posidonia Shale is a geological formation in south-west Germany dating from the Lower Jurassic period. It is World-famous due to the exceptionally preserved fossil reptiles and fish that have been found there.

This is a typical example of a slab of Posidonia shale showing numerous flattened ammonites of the genus Dactylioceras. The bedding plane is literally covered in fossils although most are impressions. An interesting item.
