JURASSIC AMMONITE

Cut and polished to show the chambers of the original shell

190 million years old

Frodingham ironstone

Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire

Ammonites are extinct marine shellfish that lived during the age of the dinosaurs, a period of the Earth's history when much of England was submerged beneath tropical seas.

The ironstone quarries at Scunthorpe were first worked for the making of iron and steel in 1859, and, in their heyday, produced beautifully-preserved fossils. All the quarries are now closed.

This specimen has a flat base so it displays well without the need of a stand. It is presented in a lidded gift box.
