JURASSIC AMMONITE
Hildoceras
180 million years old
Ilminster, Somerset
A very nice example of an ammonite from the Middle Lias 'Junction Bed' near Ilminster. It displays the suture lines which are the divisions between the chambers of the ammonite's shell.
The Lias rocks of the Ilminster area are unusual in that they take the form of a highly condensed sequence with several ammonite zones reduced to only a few metres in thickness and sometimes packed with ammonites.
