Pieces of natural jet in a display box
Jet is a black fossilised wood, known as lignite, that is found in the cliffs of Jurassic limestone and clay on the Yorkshire coast near Whitby. It has been used for jewellery for thousands of years.
Jet dates from the Jurassic period, about 180 million years old, and is the fossilised remains of trees of the family Araucaria or monkey puzzle tree.
There are ten pieces in the box, each collected from the beaches of North Yorkshire around Whitby.
