JET

Ronin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire

Fossilised wood extensively used for jewellery

A large and lovely piece of Whitby jet. A completely natural specimen recovered from the Yorkshire coast, near Whitby. From an old collection.

Jet is a black fossilised wood, known as lignite, that is found in the cliffs of Jurassic limestone and clay on the Yorkshire coast near Whitby.  It was first used for jewellery in Roman Britain but it was particularly fashionable in Victorian times.  It is still used for jewellery today.

Jet dates from the Jurassic period, about 180 million years old, and is the fossilised remains of trees of the family Araucaria or monkey puzzle tree.
