Cut and polished slice

Blindcrake, near Cockermouth, Cumbria
Jasper is an aggregate of microscopic crystals of quartz (silica). It is essentially an impure form of silica but can be very beautiful. It is usually red in colour due to inclusions of iron but it can be other colours.

This cut and polished slice is from rocks between lava flows of Carboniferous age on the edge of the Lake District.
