Sandstone with an iridescent coating of the iron mineral goethite. The iridescence produces an attractive display of rainbow colour.
The specimen is from the Woburn Sands Formation (part of the Lower Greensand) of Cretaceous age. It was collected in the 1980s and is from an old collection.
The sandstone is slightly friable and releases sand grains when handled.
