A small example of an iridescent ammonite from the classic fossil-bearing rocks of the north Somerset coast. It has an iridescent shell which consists of layers of the mineral aragonite which scatter light to produce the rainbow colours. Most of these fossils have been squashed flat before they were fossilised but they are otherwise well-preserved.

The rocks that make up this part of the Somerset coast are called the Lower Lias, which date from the very beginning of the Jurassic period.
