IGHTHAM STONE

Folkestone Formation (Cretaceous period)

Ightham, near Sevenoaks, Kent
 

Ightham Stone is a very hard, sedimentary quartzite, similar to sarsen stones. The green colour is due to the mineral glauconite.  

Ightham stone and Oldbury Stone have been used as a local building stones in Kent for thousands of years and are named after the villages of Ightham and Oldbury. Their use has given a distinctive character to the buildings in this area.
