ICELAND SPAR

A natural fragment of calcite

Calcite (calcium carbonate) breaks, or cleaves, readily along certain planes, forming curious ‘rhomb-shaped’ fragments.  Each fragment has perfectly flat faces with precisely the same angles between the faces.

The transparent variety is called ‘Iceland Spar’ after the country where it was first found.  It exhibits a characteristic 'double refraction' when light passes through the mineral.

These pieces of Iceland Spar are from Mexico.

Please note:  We have a very limited number of pieces of Iceland spar in stock. The photographs are typical examples of what we have. You will receive the best example from our current stock. Each piece comes with a descriptive label.
