ICELAND SPAR - Large transparent piece
« backICELAND SPAR
A large, transparent, natural fragment of calcite
Calcite (calcium carbonate) breaks, or cleaves, readily along certain planes, forming curious ‘rhomb-shaped’ fragments. Each fragment has perfectly flat faces with precisely the same angles between the faces.
The transparent variety is called ‘Iceland Spar’ after the country where it was first found. It exhibits a characteristic 'double refraction' when light passes through the mineral.
There are very slight marks on some of the cleavage faces but this is still a fine piece, completely transparent, and showing excellent double refraction.
