ICELAND SPAR
Natural transparent calcite - a very fine example
Calcite (calcium carbonate) breaks, or cleaves, readily along certain planes. Each fragment has perfectly flat faces with precisely the same angles between the faces.
The transparent variety is called ‘Iceland Spar’ after the country where it was first found. It exhibits a characteristic 'double refraction' when light passes through the mineral.
This is a very fine piece and completely transparent. It is a cleaved fragment from a very large single crystal. There are a few very minor nicks on one cleavage plane (see photo) but otherwise the specimen has undamaged cleaved surfaces.
Presented in a lidded gift box.
