HOLOCENE SHELLY SANDSTONE - Essex
« backHOLOCENE SHELLY SANDSTONE
Clacton, Essex
An attractive piece of sandstone containing numerous shells and dating from the Holocene period. The precise age is unknown but it is up to 10,000 years old. It was found on the beach at Clacton, probably dredged from an offshore deposit during recent beach recharging.
The shells are of the common cockle Cerastoderma edule. The sandstone is very well-cemented.
It is a good-looking specimen that sits well without the need of a stand.
