HILL O' FARE GRANITE

470 million years old

Hill O' Fare Quarry, Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

The Aberdeen granite industry developed from the middle of the 18th century, and in the 19th century the area was famous throughout the world for its granite. The city of Aberdeen, known as 'the granite city', was built largely of silver-grey granite from nearby quarries. Elsewhere in Aberdeenshire quarries produced granite of other colours and textures.

Aberdeenshire granite was formed at the peak of the Caledonian mountain building period, some 470 million years ago.

This is a gorgeous sample of polished granite from near Banchory, west of Aberdeen. The primary constituents are quartz, orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica. Polished on one side only. Presented in a lidded gift box.
