‘HARWICH SPAR’

An attractive ornamental stone unique to Essex and Suffolk

Polished slice

In the cliffs and foreshore at Harwich, and along the River Stour, is a layer of stone at the base of the London Clay containing veins of yellow and sometimes green-coloured calcite.

This attractive stone has recently been given the local name of 'Harwich Spar'.

It was first recorded in 1730 and carved and polished by local craftsmen.  It is only found in this area.
