HAND-COLOURED ANTIQUE GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE LUDLOW AREA, SHROPSHIRE (1884)
(with parts of Herefordshire and Worcestershire)
Old Series Map No. 55 NW.
One inch to one mile. Hand-coloured engraving. Very good condition (flat map)
This old series map from the Ordnance Survey was issued in 1884 and was the first to have the railways added. They were hand-coloured by the Geological Survey and were without geological sections, which were published separately.
Ludlow is a classic area for geology, and is of great historical importance, being linked to geologists such as Roderick Murchison who established the Silurian system based on his studies in the area. The world-famous Ludlow Bone Bed was, at the time, believed to be the earliest occurrence of life on land.
The science of geology has taken a number of local names from these studies and now applies them worldwide, in recognition of the importance of this area to scientific understanding.
This map is in very good condition. It's a flat map that is rolled, protected by cellophane film and delivered in a cardboard tube.
