VINTAGE (1971) SECTION OF GYPSUM/ANHYDRITE DRILL CORE

East Leake Gypsum Mine, Leicestershire

A core sample is a cylindrical section of rock obtained by drilling with a special drill with a hollow steel tube called a core drill. They are obtained to test the properties of rock in advance of mining or quarrying.

This section has a scratch mark down the length of the core from six inch nail. This was the standard test to distinguish between gypsum (hardness 2) and anhydrite (hardness 3-3.5).
