ORANGE GYPSUM

Newark, Nottinghamshire

Approximately 220 million years ago, during the time of the first dinosaurs, what is now England was a hot, featureless land with large, saline lakes in the Midlands area.

During dry seasons these lakes evaporated leaving behind thick deposits of rock salt and gypsum.

In the gypsum quarries an attractive orange variety of gypsum is often encountered.
