ORANGE GYPSUM

Newark, Nottinghamshire

Approximately 220 million years ago, during the time of the first dinosaurs, what is now England was a hot, featureless land with large, saline lakes in the Midlands area.  During dry seasons these lakes evaporated leaving behind thick deposits of rock salt and gypsum.

This is a very fine and attractive example of orange gypsum from the gypsum quarries at Newark.
