GREEN FLUORITE

Wheal Gorland, St. Day, Cornwall

For mineral collectors, Wheal Gorland is probably the most famous of all the Cornish mines, producing over 60 different mineral species. Gorland was a copper mine working at various times from 1792 to 1909.

Most of the minerals found have been collected from the mine dumps which are now a Site of Special scientific Interest. According to the SSSI citation the dumps are unrivalled in the world for the variety and quality of secondary lead and copper minerals they have produced.

This example of fluorite was collected in 1970 and is from an old collection. It shows the beautiful green colour for which this and other Cornish mines were well known.
