GREAT ROCK: DEVON'S LAST 'METAL' MINE
By Tony Brooks
(Rare hardback edition) (2004)
(Second hand copy in mint condition)
Hardback edition of this well-researched and illustrated book on an important part of Devon's mining heritage. Brief histories of other mines in the vicinity are also included.
This is the story of Devon's last metal mine. The ore mined at Great Rock was micaceous hematite, a form of iron oxide, which occurred in shiny platelets. It proved invaluable as a component of rust resisting paints that were widely used for steel structures such as railway bridges.
Great Rock Mine produced hematite found in narrow veins from the late nineteenth century until 1969.
