Graphic granite is a fascinating igneous rock that is characterised by an intergrowth of alkali feldspar and quartz. The resulting pattern has the appearance of writing, hence the name ‘graphic’ after the Latin and Greek words meaning ‘to write’.

It has been formed under special conditions resulting in the two crystal types growing together; the shape of the quartz crystals being defined by the crystal structure of the feldspar. It is not a true granite as it has been formed during the last stages of cooling of a magma body and not by the direct solidification of molten magma.
This is a lovely polished piece - almost egg-shaped.
