CUT AND POLISHED FLINT (BOTH HALVES)

Cromer, Norfolk

Flint is normally black but is often coloured by iron and other minerals and can be very attractive, with subtle patterns. This lovely pebble of flint has been cut in half and polished to a mirror finish by a lapidary craftsman.

Flint is made of quartz, or silica, and was formed in soft, limy mud on the floor of the Chalk Sea some 80 million years ago.  Over millions of years the white mud containing the flint nodules was compacted to form chalk, which is the bedrock of much of Southern England.  When flint nodules are eroded from the chalk cliffs they are turned into beach pebbles.

Presented in a lidded gift box.
