GONIATITE

400 million years old

Rissani, near Erfoud, Morocco

A polished example of a fossil goniatite.

Not to be confused with their later relatives the ammonites, goniatites lived only in the seas of the Palaeozoic Era.  They also had chambered shells but the suture lines (the divisions between the chambers) were less complex.

They lived from the Devonian Period to the Permian Period.

This example is polished on all sides.
