GIBEON METEORITE
(Iron meteorite)
Fell at least 30,000 years ago

Great Nama Land, Namibia

Small pieces (minimum 2 grams) each in a plastic display box.

The Gibeon meteorites are fragments of a giant asteroid that exploded in the atmosphere and fell in what is now Namibia in prehistoric times. The native Nama people used the iron for their tools and weapons. The first written record of these meteorites is in 1836 when English explorers entered the region.

At least 26 tons of this meteorite have been found over an area at least 200 by 100 miles in size. In recent years the Namibian Government placed a ban on their export but Gibeon meteorites are today widely distributed among museums and collectors and the pieces traded today were exported prior to the ban.

These meteorites are cut pieces contained in a plastic display box with a comprehensive label. There are some areas of rust on each piece but this is common with iron meteorites. It is advised to keep the specimen dry.
