GEOLOGY OF THE LEADHILLS DISTRICT
A brief explanation of the area covered by geological map Sheet 15E Leadhills (Scotland)
New copy
By J. D. Floyd
The British Geological Survey have produced these 'Sheet Explanations' to describe the geology of newly-surveyed 1:50,000 scale geological maps. They are effectively brief guides to the geology of the area.
The Leadhills geological map is centred on the Leadhills and Wanlockhead mining area in the Southern Uplands. Lead, silver and zinc have been mined here for hundreds of years, possibly even in Roman times. The area has also produced several tonnes of gold from alluvial sources since the 16th century. The mineral veins in this district have also been of great interest to mineral collectors. A total of 57 mineral species have been recorded and the area is the type locality for leadhillite, lanarkite and caledonite.
These sheet explanations are only brief (in this case 30 pages) but they are packed with information and colour photographs. They are written in a technical style so are not suitable for those with no previous knowledge of geology.
