GEOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT ROCKS OF CHARNWOOD FOREST, LEICESTERSHIRE

By W.W. Watts

(Hardback) (1947)
(Second hand copy in very good condition)

Charnwood Forest to the north-west of Leicester has outcrops of rocks representing the exhumed landscape of an ancient mountain range. The rocks are largely the products of explosive volcanic eruptions during the late Precambrian era, around 570 million years ago. These volcanoes formed part of an island arc, and produced huge amounts of lava and pyroclastic debris such as volcanic ash.

The rocks of Charnwood Forest are some of the oldest in England and Wales and the geology is of international importance.

Hardback. No dust jacket. Published by the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society. 1947. 160 pages. Black and white photographs and fold-out black and white geological maps. Very good condition.

Size:  22 x 14 centimetres
