GEOLOGY AND HEMATITE DEPOSITS OF SOUTH CUMBRIA

Economic memoir for the 1:50,000 geological sheet 58, and the southern part of sheet 48

By W.C.C. Rose and K.C. Dunham
(Second hand copy in very good condition) (hardback with dust jacket)

The Carboniferous Limestone to the west and south of Cumbria acted as hosts to massive deposits of hematite that nurtured an iron and steel industry of considerable national importance.

This comprehensive technical memoir deals with the southern of these two mining districts which, although now abandoned, once extended from Millom to Ulverston in Furness. The stratigraphy and palaeontology of the rocks of the area are dealt with in detail and particular attention is given to the form and nature of the orebodies.

While not as prolific a producer of mineral specimens as the the hematite mines of West Cumbria (around Egremont and Frizington), this district nonetheless produced many fine specimens that can now be seen in the Natural History Museum, particularly the remarkable calcite crystals from Stank Mine in Furness.

Hardback. Dust jacket. 170 pages. Black and white photographs and maps and mine sections in two colours. Published by the Institute of Geological Sciences (British Geological Survey) (HMSO). 1977. Very good condition.
