GENUINE VINTAGE
MINER'S SAFETY LAMP

Made by The Wolf Safety Lamp Co.
of Sheffield
Model No. 7 RMBS.

The safety lamp or ‘Davy lamp’ as it is sometimes known, was invented to provide safe illumination in mines where there was a risk of the flammable gas firedamp (methane) being present.  It did this by means of a metal gauze mesh between the chamber containing the flame and the outside air.

Despite the introduction of safe electric lighting in mines, these lamps still serve a useful purpose today for detecting flammable gases, lack of oxygen or high levels of carbon dioxide.
