MINER'S SAFETY LAMP
'Protector' type, probably dating from the 1950s
The safety lamp or ‘Davy lamp’ as it is sometimes known, was invented to provide safe illumination in mines where there was a risk of the flammable gas firedamp (methane) being present. It did this by means of a metal gauze mesh between the chamber containing the flame and the outside air.
A ‘Protector’ lamp is a self-extinguishing lamp - one in which the flame would be automatically extinguished if an attempt were made to take it apart whilst still lit. This is an SL (side lit) type which was regularly produced up until the 1970s. Despite the introduction of safe electric lighting in mines, these lamps still serve a useful purpose today for detecting flammable gases, lack of oxygen or high levels of carbon dioxide.
