'GARY GREEN JASPER'

Miocene age. About 14 million years old

McDermitt, Oregon/Nevada border, USA

This unique and beautiful quartz rock is usually called ‘petrified bog wood’ as it is thought to be fossilised wood. It is also known as Larsonite.

However, some geologists have suggested that it may be a banded flow jasper formed as part of a rhyolite lava flow; the resemblance to wood being entirely coincidental.

It is a lovely blue-green colour. This piece has one side polished to a mirror-like finish. The base has a layer of black felt, neatly done, to prevent the item scratching a polished wood surface.
