GARNET PERIDOTITE
- MANTLE ROCK!
An attractive rock that was originally part of the Earth's mantle
Almklovdalen, Nordfjord, Norway
Peridotites are special rocks that have come from deep inside the Earth - from the upper part of the mantle - and can therefore tell us what the upper mantle is made of.
They contain a large amount of the green mineral olivine (also known as the gemstone peridot - which gives the rock its name). Garnet peridotites are so called because they contain beautiful red garnets (of a type called pyrope), which make this a very attractive rock.
This example from Norway was brought up from the mantle during the Caledonian mountain building period and is now at the surface after 400 million years of erosion.
Provided with a comprehensive label as shown.
Please note: We have a very limited number of pieces of peridotite in stock. The photographs are typical examples of what we have. You will receive the best example from our current stock.
