GARNET MICA SCHIST (GLACIAL ERRATIC)

Cut and polished specimen of mica schist, studded with garnet crystals

Glacial boulder clay.  Holderness Coast, North Yorkshire

Mica schist is an attractive metamorphic rock composed of grains of mica that are oriented in such a way that the rock is easily split into thin slabs or flakes. This texture is called 'schistosity'. It is formed by heat and pressure beneath mountain ranges and is a medium-grade metamorphic rock.

This is a very unusual specimen as it was recovered from glacial boulder clay on the Yorkshire coast. Brought south from Scotland by an ice sheet 20,000 years ago.

One side has been cut and polished. The base has been cut flat so that it sits upright without a stand.
