GARNET MICA SCHIST
Fine specimen of mica schist studded with garnet crystals
Lofoten, Norway
Schist is an attractive metamorphic rock composed of mineral grains that are oriented in such a way that the rock is easily split into thin slabs or flakes. This texture is called 'schistosity' and is caused by the rock being composed of platy minerals, such as micas, talc, chlorite, or graphite. Schist is formed by heat and pressure beneath mountain ranges and is a medium-grade metamorphic rock.
This example is rich in mica and therefore referred to as a mica schist. It is a very attractive piece studded with garnet crystals.
