GALENA AND FLUORITE

Swinehope, Allendale, Northumberland

A good example of galena (lead ore) with a metallic lustre on the broken surface. This specimen has large patches of lustrous galena in pale fluorite matrix.
It was collected in the 1970s and is from an old collection.

Lead has been mined in Britain since Roman times, mostly from Derbyshire and the Northern Pennines, and these upland areas are littered with disused mines.
