GALENA (LEAD ORE) AND FLUORITE - Northumberland
« backGALENA
with fluorite
Swinehope, Allendale, Northumberland
A very good example of galena (lead ore) with a metallic lustre on the broken surface. This specimen has some pale fluorite attached. It was collected in the 1970s and is from an old collection.
Lead has been mined in Britain since Roman times, mostly from Derbyshire and the Northern Pennines, and these upland areas are littered with disused mines.
Like all galena specimens, it is very heavy for its size.
