GALENA

'Gruffy Ground', Cheddar, Somerset

Lead ore (galena) has been mined in England since Roman times, mostly from the Pennines, but also in the Mendips. Lead ingots have been recovered from here clearly stamped to show their origin and with the names of emperors dating from 49 to 200 AD.

‘Gruffy’ or ‘groovy’ ground is the Mendip name for land with closely packed mineshafts, and other mining hollows.

This specimen has lustrous patches of galena in barite.  It is from an old collection.
